Forklifts can be used for purposes beyond lifting and transporting pallets. Using the proper attachments, lift trucks can be safely used for several other applications throughout your enterprise.
There are also material-specific attachments for hard to handle items like forgings and castings, metal or plastic drums, steel coil and other oversized or awkward products. Although a lot of attachments are broadly used and well known, others are not. Here is a synopsis of a handful of the more frequently used attachments available today:
Forklift Clamp Attachment
There are several different types of clamp attachments designed for different tasks. Chief among them are:
Carton Clamp:
Carton clamps are generally used to grasp large square or rectangular products that aren’t set on a pallet like appliances and electronics. They are also an ideal solution for moving delicate goods when outfitted with an automatic pressure sensing system.
Paper Roll Clamp:
Paper roll clamps are frequently used in applications like newpaper presses, paper manufacturing and tissue production. They can be used for most different dimensions of paper rolls, and can be outfitted with automatic pressure controls and different gripper pads that help avoid damage to the paper.
Forklift Jib Attachment
Lift jibs allow for versatile lifting of long, bulky items, such as bar stock, pipes and tubes. There are even lift jibs for very bulky and heavy products such as stone countertop slabs. The forklift lift jib is positioned over both forks and is secured to the forklift with a safety chain. Adaptable hooks are positioned along the jib, giving the operator the ability to move loads of assorted lengths and sizes.
Forklift Attachments To Move Trailers
Trailer mover attachments can be a convenient method of transporting towable trailers around a building without connecting a tow vehicle. The attachment is configured with a common ball trailer hitch and a safety chain. Once the trailer is hitched, it can be moved easily and in more restricted spaces than with average tow vehicles.
Forklift Drum Attachment
Drum handlers are configured to grab the outside of a drum cylinder and make short work of managing heavy plastic, steel or fiber drums. Most are equipped to manage one or two drums simultaneously.
Forklift Extensions
Extensions permit you to manage larger or non-uniformly shaped loads with greater stability. The operator simply positions the forks inside the extensions and secures them in place, giving the forklift extended forks to support hard to handle loads.
Fork Positioners
These attachments are very common. They enable you to hydraulically adjust the space between your forks. This permits faster and more effective handling of variably sized object and pallets.
Push Pull Forklift Attachment
Push / pull attachments (sometimes known as Slipsheet Forklift Attachments) are used for handling loads that use slip sheets as opposed to pallets. They are often used for bagged products like cement or grains, and food items like packaged food, dairy and fruit. Slipsheets are used instead of pallets, saving space and eliminating the cost of pallets.
